The time has finally come!
Sirens will present an online event to launch its first album, Boundless, on Friday, November 13, 2020 at 8:00 PM.
The group recorded these works in December 2019 with noted producer Jeff Reilly of Halifax, who has produced albums for the Canadian Chamber Choir and Xara Choral Theatre. Captured in the beautiful acoustics of the Church of St. Bonaventure in Tracadie Cross, the recording was to be released during a live performance earlier this year. However, like so many other aspects of life recently, those plans had to be rearranged.
The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically changed the world of live music, but Sirens is seeking ways to engage with its singers and its audiences. The songs of Boundless tell stories about struggle and the resiliency of the human spirit. Although it was recorded before the current pandemic, its message is even more powerful now.
Artistic Director Kelsea McLean describes it this way: “Our first album honours women’s propensity for resilience. When confronted with life’s obstacles, women have an innate drive to overcome and seek freedom from their suffering and challenges. This album tells stories of these adversities, but more importantly, it journeys to a place of hope and light,” said McLean.
“Reaching lightness could not happen without the fortitude of strong women working together in community. Boundless is a celebration of an uplifting and encouraging sisterhood. It is through our shared love and support that we take flight and soar!”
This special event will include the world premiere of Katerina Gimon’s choral work “In Her Image,” with text by poet Lauren Peat. The virtual début of this piece will be presented through the work of Island filmmaker Millefiore Clarkes. Mille and her team recently spent a day with the singers in and around historic St. Mary’s Church in Indian River. She captured footage of the physically-distancing singers and has created a visual story to accompany the composition, thanks to support from FACTOR, who also funded the creation of the album.
