New Commission: “Sorrow Song of Whales”

It’s here! Our newly commissioned work by Canadian Composer Jeff Enns arrived last week, and we can’t wait to dive in during our next rehearsal.

The text is based on the “Mermaid Legend” as told by PEI Mi’kmaq elder, Mathilda Knockwood. Inspired by the legend, PEI Poet Laureate Deirdre Kessler draws on parallels of environmental crisis and sustainability to create poetry specifically for our new work.

We would especially like to thank the Mi’kmaq Confederacy of PEI, Ron Zakar, Julie Pellissier-Lush, the creative team (Jeff, Mathilda, and Deirdre!), and of course Prince Edward Island Government for their support of this commission!

The work will be premiered in July 2018 during our performance Podium 2018 Conference & Festival, but we will also perform a sneak-peek at The Indian River Festival in June.
